Learn how to iron a jacket correctly and quickly

Even if you prefer dry cleaning, knowing how to iron a blazer can be very useful. Sometimes you need to wash a jacket urgently, and then to iron it, or to smooth it out after it has spent a long time folded up in a suitcase. You can actually do that very easily at home with your iron.

What you will need

The right preparation is important for any job. To iron a suit coat, you must have certain tools. Do not be afraid, all of you have long known about these ironing devices.

  • Ironing board with a narrow nozzle – a special little board that helps smooth out fuller parts.
  • Iron. It is best to iron with a steam function, but today almost all models can produce steam that comes out of the holes on the sole.
  • Thin cotton fabric, such as gauze.

The jacket itself should also be prepared – it should be clean. If it spent a long time in the closet and became covered with dust, then it should be shaken out and cleaned with a wet brush.

Be sure to check the care label on the lining to see manufacturer recommendations. After all, how do you expect to iron a jacket if you do not know the composition of the fabric? An experienced person can determine what temperature to set the iron to just by looking at the fabric, but that’s what the different tags are for – to tell us how to care for the item. Hint: sometimes labels are hidden in the inside pockets.

Course of action

The first step is to install the board, turn on the iron and pour water into a basin. The water is going to be used to wet the clean rag through which we will iron the clothes. Now let’s see how to iron a jacket on a standard board.

Most often, you would start with the sleeves. They are pulled over the nozzle and gently ironed with a steady steam supply, gradually turning the sleeve in a circle, making sure that there are no folds and bends. No need to make creases.

If you do not have a nozzle, then the sleeve can be pulled onto a wooden rolling pin wrapped in a towel. You will end up with a kind of roller, which is very convenient to use at home.

Pay particular attention to the shoulders and lapels. To do this, pull the shoulder of the jacket over the tapering part of the board, iron it and all other details. The shoulder should be damp if you want to be able to smooth the hard part out with an iron. Iron lapels without steaming, just through your cotton cloth.

As the last step you need to iron the side and back, and at the very end, iron the collar separately, straightening it.

Helpful tips

If the fabric of your blazer is fleecy, then you need to start ironing it from above so that the pile lies correctly and does not break. A smooth fabric can, in general, be ironed in any direction, but if you have chosen a certain direction, then you need to observe it on the surface of the entire jacket.

Gauze or other thin material through which you are ironing should be wet and squeezed so that you don’t get any shiny spots on the jacket.

An alternative to the iron is a steamer. You can use to smooth out clothing while it hangs on a hanger without using a board and other tricks, also, the steamer does not leave shiny stains on clothes. After completing the ironing, refrain from wearing the blazer for a little while. It should dry out and cool down completely, so it doesn’t wrinkle very quickly once you put it on.
